Explore a little bit of my collection
I’m not into “volume collecting” where I own tens of thousands of items. I’m into curated collecting, where I only buy things that mean something to me.
Pictured here are all of my favorite 80s & 90s basketball, football and hockey cards. The two empty slots are for a Gretzky rookie and a Lemieux rookie. Just haven’t found the right ones for the right deal yet.
Also pictured are my original, childhood WWF wrestling buddies. Those two plush dolls were bodyslammed and powerbombed 100 times a day when I was little.
Looks like a random Ghostbusters cup made it into the pic, too. That belonged to my younger brother - also original.
Here’s my collection of Halloween VHS tapes.
All of them are former rental tapes, and most of them are the first print run.
This collection is capped off by the crown jewel, the “Media print” copy of the original Halloween from 1979.
Many people don’t know that there was actually another print before the Media. Apparently the company was originally called “MEDA” and there was a print run made that had “MEDA” printed in the bottom right instead of “MEDIA.”
As much as I’d love to own one, they’re nearly impossible to find, and way out of my price range of what I’m willing to pay. I’m happy with this copy.
These NES games are probably going to the grave with me.
Why?
They’re from Top 40 Video (Monessen, PA), which was one of our main spots for renting games when we were kids.
I randomly ran into an old college friend at a yard sale and we started talking about video games, and he told me that he had bought out the Top 40 Video inventory a few years back.
We landed on a deal pretty quickly and these became one of the cornerstones of my collection.
Who needs Stadium Events when you can have the actual copy of Excitebike that you rented in the 1980s? (OK, so I once owned a Stadium Events too.)
By the way, I’m always on the hunt for rental games or VHS tapes from any of the rental stores in the Mon Valley area!
It wouldn’t be highlights unless I included my crown jewels.
The Hills Department Store shopping cart from the Rostraver, PA store is probably the most iconic piece in my collection. Imagine my wife’s horror when I sent her a picture of me in the car with a shopping cart that would find a home in our basement!
We also have a slightly later model hand basket, and a register light cover. Not sure the provenance on these items, but they really set the mood.
Not pictured is a Hills employee vest that I tend to break out every couple years on Halloween!
